Bodies are amazing! With a little discipline, a little training, a little practice we can do awe inspiring wonderful weird and maybe even a little frightening things. And, with a little negative discipline, with a lack of training, with an absence of practice, there are things that become impossible for us to do.
It is rare for a bus in Bangalore to come to a complete stop. Most embarking and disembarking is in motion, and is usually undertaken with an ease and nonchalance that is both frightening and a little jealousy making. Kids with full school bags, business men with brief cases and shiny shiny pants, grandmas with an arm full of grocery's - all simply hop on and off without effort manipulating gravity and velocity like a cloud bumping into a pillow.
At any mall escalator in Bangalore (two things that are quite new here) you will encounter, at any given moment, a handful of people trying to get on, paralyzed, standing staring trying to find this strange monotonous rhythm, unable or unwilling to take that first step up or down, a step that is always into a stationary movement. That impossible first step into the mechanical.
